It sounds like “white noise,” but it is in fact MUCH more.

The sound you hear is perceived by your ear and conscious mind as rushing water or random noise, but it's actually not random.

Consider: if you believe in a God capable of hearing the voices and prayers of every person on earth at the same time and understanding them, then it's reasonable to believe He'd be able to understand a recording of the same thing.
Depending on your theology and given that most Christians believe in two "teams" in the spirit realm, He may not be the only one with the capacity to hear through the din of everyone talking at once, and zero in on specific conversations.
If that's the case, then the enemy's forces certainly wouldn't like an environment where they were constantly being bombarded by the Word of God.

It's an imprecise science for many reasons, but without a doubt, it's a real phenomenon.
